A trip to Jordan can be a
wonderful compliment to your stay in Israel. Jordan is close, friendly
and although similar to Israel in climate and landscape, it has it's
own personality and some unique archaeological sites. The jewel in the
crown is, of course, Petra, although Jerash, Mt. Nebo
and Madeba do not fall far behind. Since the signing of the peace
treaty between Israel and Jordan in 1994, travel between the two countries
has become open and easy. Although not quite like crossing between Canada
and the US or inside Western Europe, a little bit of time and planning
can make the border crossing simple and quick. Please read carefully
the following information about tours, border crossings etc., in order
to make the whole process enjoyable and easy.
Getting into Jordan
People who wish to cross into Jordan via the Eilat or Sheik Hussein
border crossing and hold non-Israeli passports can usually obtain visas
at the border. Holders of Israeli passports must obtain a visa before
crossing into Jordan. Holders of Israeli passports who also
have a second passport, can enter Jordan on their second passport (they
must, of course, leave Israel on their Israeli passport). The Eilat
crossing is a 10 minutes drive from the center of the city, the Sheik
Hussein crossing is near Beit Shean, a 90 minute drive from Jerusalem.
1. The Allenby bridge crossing is only 30 minutes from Jerusalem.
Crossing via the Allenby is possible if you already have a Jordanian
visa in your passport.
